🧢 Burgundy & Gray Striped Crochet Letter "F" Keychain with Flowers — Free Pattern 🌸

Hello lovely crocheters! ❤️🩢 Today I'm sharing a chunky, elegant and super giftable burgundy and gray striped letter "F" keychain, decorated with a creamy white flower, a little yellow flower, sage-green leaves and tiny baby's-breath buds. πŸ›️ Materials

  • 🌼 Butter-yellow cotton yarn scrap (small flower)
  • 🌿 Sage-green cotton yarn (#8FAE7E) (leaves + bud stems)

  • ✨ Gold jump ring (6 mm), gold split key ring and gold swivel clasp
  • πŸ“Œ Foam mat and pearl-head pins (optional, for shaping)

πŸ”€ Abbreviations (US terms)

MR = magic ring  |  ch = chain  |  sl st = slip stitch  |  sc = single crochet  |  hdc = half double crochet  |  dc = double crochet  |  inc = 2 sc in the same stitch  |  sc2tog = single crochet 2 together (decrease)  |  R = round  |  B = burgundy  |  G = gray  |  ( ) = total stitches at the end of the round

πŸ’‘ Before You Start

  • The letter is made of 3 tubes (stem, top arm, middle arm) that are sewn together.
  • Work in a continuous spiral — don't join rounds. Mark the first stitch of every round with a stitch marker.
  • Crochet tightly and stuff firmly so the letter holds its shape.
  • Every stripe is 3 rounds wide. Colours are noted in each round range below.

🎨 How to Change Colours Neatly

  1. On the last sc of the last round of a stripe, stop before the final yarn over. Drop the old colour and pull the new colour through to finish the stitch.
  2. Continue in the new colour. Leave the old yarn hanging inside the tube and carry it loosely up the inside — it won't show once the tube is stuffed.
  3. Stripes in a spiral always make a tiny step ("jog"). Keep that spot on the back of the letter, away from the flowers.
  4. Cut the carried yarn when you finish each piece and weave in the ends inside.

⚠️ Important tip: deep red cotton can bleed. Never wet-block this keychain, and test a small piece of burgundy in warm water on a white cloth before you start.

πŸ”Ή Part 1 — The Stem

  1. R1 (B): 6 sc in a MR (6)
  2. R2 (B): inc in each stitch around (12)
  3. R3 (B): sc in each stitch around (12)
  4. R4–R6 (G): sc in each stitch around (12) — 3 rounds
  5. R7–R9 (B): sc in each stitch around (12) — start stuffing here and keep adding as you go
  6. R10–R12 (G): sc in each stitch around (12)
  7. R13–R15 (B): sc in each stitch around (12)
  8. R16 (G): sc in each stitch around (12)
  9. R17 (G): (sc2tog) × 6 (6)

Add the last bit of stuffing, fasten off, thread the tail through the front loops of the remaining 6 stitches, pull tight to close and weave in the end. ✔️

πŸ”Ή Part 2 — The Top Arm — make 1

  1. R1 (B): 6 sc in a MR (6)
  2. R2 (B): inc in each stitch around (12)
  3. R3 (B): sc in each stitch around (12)
  4. R4–R6 (G): sc in each stitch around (12)
  5. R7–R9 (B): sc in each stitch around (12)
  6. R10 (G): sc in each stitch around (12)

Stuff lightly. Do not close the end. Fasten off leaving a 40 cm (16 in) tail and flatten the open end slightly.

πŸ”Ή Part 3 — The Middle Arm — make 1

  1. R1 (B): 6 sc in a MR (6)
  2. R2 (B): inc in each stitch around (12)
  3. R3 (B): sc in each stitch around (12)
  4. R4–R6 (G): sc in each stitch around (12)
  5. R7–R8 (B): sc in each stitch around (12)

The middle arm is a little shorter than the top arm, just like a real letter "F"! Stuff lightly, leave the end open and fasten off with a 40 cm (16 in) tail.

🧩 Assembling the Letter "F"

  1. Lay the stem upright with the closed (decreased) end at the top and the colour-change step facing the back.
  2. Top arm: pin the open end of the top arm to the right side of the stem, flush with the top, so the arm points straight out to the right (90°). Sew all the way around the open edge with whip stitch, then go around once more for strength.
  3. Middle arm: pin the middle arm to the right side of the stem, leaving a gap under the top arm about as wide as the arm itself (about 1.5 cm / 3–4 rounds). Sew it on the same way.
  4. If your yarn tail colour doesn't blend with the stem stripe, finish the seam with a needle threaded with matching burgundy or gray yarn. Weave in all the ends.

πŸ“Œ Optional Shaping (Dry)

Lay the assembled "F" flat on a foam mat, square the corners with your fingers and gently pin the arms at right angles with pearl-head pins pushed into the seams. Leave it for 20–30 minutes, then remove the pins. Keep it dry — no misting or steaming (see the colour-bleeding tip above)! ✨

🌸 The Flowers

🀍 Large White Flower — make 1 (white + golden yellow)

  1. R1: 5 sc in a MR, sl st to join to the first sc (5)
  2. R2 (petals): in each stitch work (sl st, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, sl st) all in the same stitch. Repeat in each of the 5 stitches (5 rounded petals).

Fasten off leaving a tail. Centre: with golden-yellow yarn, make 6 sc in a MR, sl st to join, fasten off and sew it onto the middle of the flower.

πŸ’› Small Yellow Flower — make 1 (butter yellow)

  1. R1: 5 sc in a MR, sl st to join (5)
  2. R2 (petals): in each stitch work (sl st, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, sl st) all in the same stitch. Repeat 5 times (5 petals).

Fasten off leaving a tail. Make a tiny white French knot (2 wraps) in the centre.

🌿 Leaves — make 2 (sage green)

Ch 9. Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook: sl st, sc, hdc, dc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st (8 stitches). Fasten off leaving a tail.

🀍 Baby's-Breath Buds — make 4

  • Stem: with sage green, ch 6. Fasten off leaving a tail.
  • Bud: with white, 5 sc in a MR, pull the ring tight, fasten off leaving a tail, and sew the bud to the tip of a stem.

πŸŽ€ Putting It All Together

The flower cluster sits at the lower-left of the "F", on the left edge of the stem near the bottom (the front side, opposite the colour-change step):

  1. Sew the 2 leaves first, angled out to the left and downwards.
  2. Sew the 4 bud stems so they peek out above and beside the leaves.
  3. Sew the large white flower on top, about 2.5 cm (1 in) above the bottom of the stem, slightly overhanging the left edge.
  4. Sew the small yellow flower overlapping the lower-right of the large flower.
  5. Use matching yarn and tack each flower in a few places so nothing floats loose.

✨ Adding the Hardware

  1. Thread the gold jump ring through 2–3 stitches at the top-left of the stem and secure it with a few stitches of burgundy yarn.
  2. Attach the gold split key ring and the gold swivel clasp to the jump ring.
  3. Clip it on your favourite handbag — and you're done! πŸ‘œ❤️🩢

🌟 Tips & Variations

  • 🎨 Love other colour pairs? Navy & cream, black & gold, or forest green & ivory look beautiful in the same stripes.
  • πŸ“ Want a chunkier letter? Add one more increase round (R3: (sc, inc) × 6 = 18) and work every tube with 18 stitches, adding 2–3 more rounds to the length.
  • πŸ”€ Once you know this pattern, you can make other straight-line letters (E, H, L, T) the same way!
  • 🧼 Spot clean only with a damp white cloth.
