π§Ά Crochet Letter "M" Keychain with Daisy & Baby's Breath πΌ
A puffy, cuddly initial keychain you can make in one evening ✨
Hi lovely crafters! π After the letters "F" and "S", so many of you asked for more initials, so today I'm sharing my pattern for a puffy crochet letter "M" keychain. It's decorated with a cream daisy, a little sprig of white baby's breath and two sage-green leaves. I made mine in raspberry pink, and it looks so sweet hanging on a handbag! π Of course, you can use any color you love. π
Colors used: raspberry pink · cream · mustard yellow · white · sage green
π Finished size: about 9 cm wide, 9 cm tall and 1.5 cm thick.
𧡠Materials
- Worsted weight mercerized cotton yarn: raspberry pink for the letter, plus cream, mustard yellow, white and sage green π¨
- 3 mm crochet hook (keep your tension tight) πͺ
- Polyester fiberfill ☁️
- Stitch markers
- Tapestry needle πͺ‘
- Gold key ring with a swivel clasp and a short chain π
- Blocking mat and pearl-head pins π
π Abbreviations (US terms)
MR magic ring · ch chain · sc single crochet · sc2tog single crochet 2 together (decrease) · hdc half double crochet · sl st slip stitch · st(s) stitch(es)
Gauge: about 5 sc and 5 rows = 2 cm. Gauge isn't critical for a keychain, but tight stitches keep the stuffing hidden.
π€ The Letter
The "M" is made from two identical flat pieces (a front and a back) worked in rows of sc. At the end of every row, ch 1 and turn (the ch 1 does not count as a stitch). The two pieces are then joined with a round of sc and stuffed, which gives the letter its puffy shape and the neat raised edge.
Legs (make 2 for each piece)
| Row | Instructions |
|---|---|
| Foundation | ch 8 |
| 1 | sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across (7) |
| 2–10 | sc in each st across (7) |
Fasten off the first leg. Leave the second leg on your hook — don't fasten off. π‘
Joining the legs and the middle
| Row | Instructions |
|---|---|
| 11 | sc in each st of the leg on your hook (7), ch 8, then sc in each st across the first leg (7) — 22 sts (7 sc + 8 ch + 7 sc) |
| 12 | sc in each st and each ch across (22) |
| 13–14 | sc in each st across (22) |
The two peaks
Now the work splits in two, which creates the "V" in the middle of the "M".
| Row | First peak (first 11 sts only) |
|---|---|
| 15 | sc in the first 11 sts, leave the rest unworked (11) |
| 16 | sc2tog at the middle edge, sc to the end (10) |
| 17–18 | sc in each st (10) |
| 19 | sc2tog at the middle edge, sc to the end (9) |
| 20–21 | sc in each st (9) |
| 22 | sc2tog at the middle edge, sc to the end (8) |
Fasten off. Join the yarn in the 12th st of row 14 and work the second peak over the remaining 11 sts exactly the same way, always decreasing at the middle edge. Fasten off.
Make a second identical piece. Block both pieces flat with pins so the edges are straight. π
Joining & stuffing
Place the two pieces together, wrong sides facing. Join the pink yarn at the bottom of one leg and work sc evenly around the whole outline, through both layers at once. Work 3 sc in each outer corner so the corners stay sharp and the edge lies flat.
When you have about 4 cm left, stuff the letter evenly. Push small pieces of fiberfill into the peaks and legs first, then fill the middle. Finish the round, sl st to the first sc, fasten off and hide the end inside the letter. ☁️
πΌ The Flowers
π€ Cream daisy
Center: with mustard yellow, MR, 10 sc, sl st to join and fasten off.
Petals: join cream yarn in any st. *Ch 5, sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in the next ch, hdc in the next 2 ch, sl st in the next st of the center*. Repeat 10 times. You'll have 10 pointed petals. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
πΏ Baby's breath sprig
Tiny buds (make 5, in white): MR, 6 sc, pull the ring tight to close and fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Each bud puffs into a tiny ball with no stuffing needed.
Stems: with sage green, embroider 3–5 thin stems with backstitch on the front of the letter, fanning out like a little bouquet. Sew one bud at the tip of each stem.
π Leaves (make 2, in sage green)
Ch 8. Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook:
- First side: sl st, sc, hdc, hdc, hdc, sc
- Tip: 3 sc in the last chain
- Second side (along the bottom loops): sc, hdc, hdc, hdc, sc, sl st
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
πͺ‘ Assembly
- Sew the two leaves onto the lower left leg, one pointing up and one pointing down.
- Embroider the baby's breath stems just above them and sew on the buds.
- Sew the daisy on top of the leaves. It looks lovely when it slightly overlaps the outer edge of the letter. πΈ
- Sew a ch-6 loop firmly at the bottom of the "V" between the two peaks, and attach the gold chain, swivel clasp and key ring. π
Measurements may vary slightly depending on your yarn and tension.
⏱️ Skill Level & Time
Skill level: Easy to intermediate. If you can work rows of single crochet and a simple decrease, you can make this keychain.
Time: About 3–4 hours in total. The two letter pieces take the most time; the flowers go quickly once you get into a rhythm.
π‘ Tips for a Perfect "M"
- Mark the middle edge. Before you start the peaks, put a stitch marker on the middle side of each peak so you always decrease on the correct edge.
- Count your stitches. Check that each row has the right number of stitches. One extra stitch makes the letter lean.
- Match the pieces. Lay the front and back on top of each other before joining. If one is bigger, block it a little smaller with pins.
- Stuff in small pieces. Small tufts of fiberfill give a smooth, even surface with no lumps.
- Hang it from the middle. Attaching the key ring at the "V" makes the letter hang straight and balanced.
π Make It Personal
An "M" keychain makes a sweet gift for a mom, a Maria, a Mohamed or anyone whose name starts with M. π It's also a lovely Mother's Day gift, especially in her favorite color.
You can easily change the look: swap the daisy for a tiny rose, use a pastel letter with a bright flower, or skip the baby's breath for a simpler style. π·
π§Ό Care
Hand-wash only. If the keychain gets dirty, spot-clean it with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, then let it air-dry flat. Gently reshape the peaks and the flower petals with your fingers while it's still damp.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make the letter bigger?
Yes. Use a thicker yarn and a bigger hook, or add the same number of stitches and rows to every part of the pattern.
Do I need wire for this letter?
No. Because the "M" is made from two flat pieces stuffed together, it holds its shape without wire.
Is it suitable for small children?
Not for babies or toddlers, because of the small sewn-on parts and the metal key ring. It's best for older children and adults.
Can I use the same method for other letters?
Yes! Draw your letter on squared paper, with one square for each stitch, then crochet two pieces following your drawing and join them the same way.
✅ Enjoy making it, and happy crocheting! π§Άπ
